#CSAM18 Day 13: Model of Psychological Nigrescence

There are six sectors: Early black identity development, pre-adolescence, adolescence, early adulthood, and adult nigrescence. A good explainer can be found at https://studentdevelopmenttheory.wordpress.com/racial-identity-development/. Identity development begins within the family, then to learning from the black adults in the child's life, then to beginning to develop an idea of what being black means to oneself, moving into early adulthood where internalized racism, establishment of peers with the same values happens, developing into Adult Nigrescence, which is four different stages, and concluding with Nigrescence Recycling.

Title of theory: Model of Psychological Nigrescence

Year theory was published: 1978

Students originally studied: William E. Cross created the sectors while observing his own life and the life of the Black Americans around him.

Background of the author: William Cross is an African American who grew up during segregation. His father was a Pullman porter and his mother held several jobs through his life, including being a maid. His father pressured him to get a college education and pursue a skilled trade, and in 1963 he enrolled in a clinical psychology master's program. He believed the different groups within the Black movement created a conversion experience for black Americans. in 1991, Cross expanded his original theory. One of these changes was changing it from a more deficit-minded process (pre-encounters were all negative) to better defined experiences between negative and low-salience.

How theory can be used now: We should be aware of this identity development process (as we should with all identity development processes). Giving our students a safe place to learn and explore their own development and identity. We should also give them freedom to find their people, the people who share their values, and also the space to explore those values.

Words of warning: I don’t have any
